My friends and I had great plans for our day trip over from Auckland to Waiheke Island.
We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day as we boarded the ferry from Auckland with many other Aucklanders enjoying their long weekend.
The ferry journey was quick and scenic, we passed numerous islands that looked both uninhabited with stunning remote beaches, yet somehow perfectly manicured as if they were tended to by gardeners every day.
Upon arriving on the island, our tickets for the vineyard hopper bus in hand, we discussed our route and the many vineyards we would love to visit.
Our driver advised those on board to hop off and start at Jurassic Ridge vineyard as a good starting point. Not wanting to follow the crowd, and starting as we meant to go on we thought we’d bite the bullet and go straight to Mudbrick Vineyard.
Mudbrick is simply beautiful!! The views from the vineyard overlooking the rolling hills on towards the water and the Auckland sky line on a clear sunny day cannot be beaten.
We enjoyed a wine tasting (standard tasting of 5 wines for $10pp) and an incredible variety of platters including one of the most stunning cheese boards I have ever witnessed. The waitress took pleasure in telling us we were enjoying our cheese in the very same place Taylor Swift sat a few weeks previously. Perhaps this comment, coupled with the stunning wine, the sunshine and the views are what caused us to sit up on the top deck of Mudbrick for far longer than expected….our schedule was already falling somewhat behind….
Mudbrick Vineyard offers wine tasting of 5 standard wines for $10 per person or $15 pp for the premium wines.
The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Opening hours vary, best to check ahead first
The Waiheke Vineyard Hopper offers return ferry tickets, all day access to the vineyard hopper bus and all day access to the Fullers public buses for $54
